Civil War

I came across a MOST interesting letter written by a J.W. Darbee of Roscoe NY to my grandfather A.M. Scriber in 1919. As I have mentioned, my grandfather was the editor of the Republican Watchman newspaper and apparently had published a story about an old type of paper used by merchants. Enclosed in this letter is a piece of paper made of straw which the sender claims he carried with him throughout the Civil War and on Sherman's March. He says that the paper is 57 years old meaning that then it would have been made in 1862 and today would be 145 years old. ?I am not sure just who J. W. Darbee was but there was a John Wesley Darbee b. 6 Apr 1841 (s/o Samuel Darbee and Jane Montgomery of Rockland). noted on p. 207 (Beverkill Valley by Irene Barnhart and Joan Powell ) On p. 366 of this same book he is also mentioned. He married Ellen Keener (5 Feb 1873 of Andes NY). He died 1920 (just a year after he sent this letter) and is buried in Riverview Cemetery, Roscoe NY. He served in Co C 143rd Regiment, New York Volunteers of the Civil War. He had 6 daughters : Fannie (m. William J. Thompson), Nettie (m. F.W. Odwell), Mary (never married), Nellie M (died young), Jennie (m. H. A. Robinson) and Hettie (m. K. A. Sprague. Harry Darbee (of fly fishing fame) is the grandson of his brother, Cleveland Darbee. John Wesley Darbee was the son of Samuel Darbee Jr. His grandparents were Samuel Sr. and Hannah Kimball.?  -  Susan

THE 143RD NEW YORK VOLUNTEERS

The 143rd New York was the Civil War regiment formed, primarily, in Sullivan
County. It had a fascinating history. One interesting point was that the 143rd
was formed to an extent from those people who could not join the sister
regiment, the 124th, which was formed in Orange County and had a full complement
of men. The 124th had a distinguished record fighting in all the battles in the
East, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg through Appomattox. The 143rd
fought primarily in the West, and also had a distinguished record. The two
regiments are a wonderful contrast for that reason. Instead of writing a
detailed history of the 143rd, which I think would bore many who are not rabidly
interested in the Civil War, I will write a short piece emphasizing the
interesting points of their service.

The 143rd was formed in October of 1862. They had many assignments in the first
10 months of their existence (see below), before their final assignment to the
11th Corps of the Army of the Potomac, in the East, around Washington, D.C, in
July, 1863. One has to understand the 11th Corps before going on. The 11th Corps
had a terrible reputation, and the assignment of the 143rd to this Corps was not
a plum. First, the 11th Corps was composed of a very large percentage of
Germans, and foreigners were not respected in any case, at this time. Second,
the 11th Corps had participated in some of the most famous disasters of the Army
of the Potomac. At Chancellorsville, in May of 1863, they had been very badly
posted, and Stonewall Jackson had totally routed the Corps; the scene of several
thousand 'Dutchmen' throwing away their guns and running for the rear was etched
in the mind of the army. Two months later, at Gettysburg, they had, again, been
badly posted, flanked, again, and totally routed. By the time the 143rd had
joined them, in September of 1863, the Army of the Potomac did not want the 11th
Corps in that army. It is unfortunate because, if one takes an impartial look at
the fighting the 11th Corps actually did, they fought as well as anyone could
have under the circumstances facing them. They had simply been poorly led in an
army which did not care very much about decent leadership.

The 11th Corps was combined with the 12th Corps, which had been decimated at
Gettysburg, to form a new Corps, the 20th Corps, and the entire Corps was
shipped West, by train, surviving a horrible train wreck in October, to join the
army which was to become General William Tecumsah Sherman's army, in front of
Chattanooga. The 20th Corps was the only group of men from the East who fought
in the West, and they, initially, suffered from the impression that the
Westerners had of Eastern soldiers; in the West, the armies usually won their
battles. In the East, the armies lost, and the Westerners, hard-bitten
frontiersmen to a very large extent, thought of the Easterners as prissy 'band-
box' soldiers, more interested in fancy uniforms and drill than a good fight.
The 20th Corps had to earn their spurs before they would be accepted.
The first battle fought was the fighting which lifted the siege of Chattanooga,
the so-called 'Battle in the Clouds.' The Confederates were driven off of a
small mountain and routed. At this point, General Sherman took over the army,
and began planning the great campaign, which was to, ultimately, end the war.
After Chattanooga, the Confederates withdrew to a small ridge and fortified it.
Instead of attacking, Sherman sent a Corps around behind the Confederates,
forcing them to retreat and fight a hard battle at Resaca. There, Col. Tom
Collins, of Livingston Manor, won a Medal of Honor for capturing a Confederate
flag. You will hear more of Col. Collins; he was a Scout for General Sherman,
and figured prominently in many battles.

After Resaca, the Confederates withdrew, slowly, to Atlanta, fighting many
battles and skirmishes along the way. In front of Atlanta, they decided to
fight. At the great battle of Peach Tree Creek, the 143rd became isolated, and
were in danger of being overrun. Tom Collins was chosen to ride through the
Confederate battle line, somehow, to get a message to headquarters and tell them
of the dire position of the 143rd. Braving bullets, he dashed off on his horse
and delivered his message to save his regiment.

After this battle, Atlanta fell to Sherman. The question was, what to do next?
Sherman typically chose a bold maneuver; many people do not understand that a
war is not over until the people realize it is over. Sherman decided to
demonstrate to the people of the Confederacy that they had lost by marching his
army across the State of Georgia. He would show that there was nothing the
Confederates could do to stop a Union army from doing to.
Jettisoning all extra baggage, he cut his army off from any hope of supply or
help, and began his epic March to the Sea. His army supported themselves by
foraging for food and supplies, and cut a swath 60 miles wide through the State
of Georgia until, in late December 1864, Sherman arrived at Savannah, Georgia,
sending a message to President Lincoln and General Grant that he had a Christmas
present for them, the City of Savannah.

At this point, General Grant wanted to ship Sherman's army by sea to Richmond to
help Grant fight the Confederate army under Robert E. Lee. Sherman pointed out
that it would take longer to ship the men then it would to have the men walk,
and his army began another great march, from Savannah to Richmond. The roads
were sparse and inadequate for an army, so they had to, often, build their own
roads, cross swamps that were set afire by the Confederates in order to slow
Sherman down, and build bridges across the many rivers in their way. They very
quickly became black from the tar of the burning forest fires; in fact, in one
instance, before the end of their march, they met a Negro regiment which thought
that they were also Negroes.

Upon reaching North Carolina, Sherman's army faced the last remnants of the army
they had beaten around Atlanta. The Confederates attacked Sherman at
Bentonville, North Carolina, where a part of Sherman's army was separated from
the rest. In hard fighting, Sherman beat back the assault. The Confederates
gathered for one last, desperate fight, and Sherman gathered his army and
supplies to oblige them.

Meanwhile, the main Confederate army under Robert E. Lee had surrendered to
Grant. It was imperative that word be sent to Sherman that the war was over,
before any more men died. Tom Collins, now a Sergeant, was chosen to carry this
final message of the war. He rode for 16 hours, straight, and arrived at General
Sherman's headquarters as the army was gathering himself to fight. Tom Collins
delivered the message that ended the war, finally and completely.

The final act of Sherman, his army and the 143rd New York was a grand march to
be held in Washington D.C. Sherman marched his men through many of the
battlefields fought between Richmond and Washington, and they camped outside of
the city, finally meeting their counterparts in the Eastern Army of the Potomac.
What a strange meeting that must have been. The Army of the Potomac had new,
clean uniforms, shiny guns and looked like a parade-ground organization.
Sherman's men were literally in rags, having marched for months without
resupply. Their camp was full of camp followers, pets and rude carts that they
had used to carry their personal belongings. There was wary respect between the
armies, as Sherman's men considered themselves, never having lost a battle, to
be far superior to the 'band box soldiers' of the Eastern army.

The Grand Review was held over three days; on the first day, the Army of the
Potomac marched, looking splendid with their new uniforms, white gloves and guns
shined so they sparkled in the sun. They furled their flags, and then gathered
to watch Sherman's men, on the second day.

Sherman refused to allow new uniforms for his men. He felt that there could be
no more honorable gear than the uniforms in which they had arrived. His army
marched with their mules, goats, chickens and the pigs which were the pets and
fodder for the army. They made a sharp contrast to the day before, but they were
an army of legend, and had no need or necessity to impress anyone. They were men
who could and did fight. They were proud of themselves, their accomplishments
and their story. They had marched 1500 miles, from Chattanooga to Washington
D.C., beating every obstacle of man and nature that had been placed in their
path. No American army has ever equaled their feat. Now, it was time for them to
go home.
