Alexander Overton

(1813-1900)

Born in Feb 1813. Alexander died in Livingston Manor NY on 18 Aug 1900; he was 87.

He was the son of David Overton and Elizabeth Purvis and grandson of George Purvis (originally of Scotland or England) and James Overton (of New London CT) who were both early settlers of the Town of Rockland NY. James had actually settled first in Mamakating near Bloomingburg along with the Joseph Ellis and Lt. Thomas Mott families around the time of the Revolutionary War. (There were still many Indians in this area and they lived in fear for their lives. All of these families eventually moved to Rockland)

Alexander married Marinda Ellis born 1816, daughter of ____ ? Ellis.

It is quite likely that Marinda  was related to her husband in some way since Alexander’s grandmother (wife of James Overton) was Sybilla Ellis, the daughter of a Joseph Ellis. Lt. Thomas Mott was married to Sybilla’s sister, Mary “Polly” Ellis. The Overton, Ellis and Mott families remained very close, settling near one another in the Town of Rockland.

Alexander’s death record states that he died of cerebral apoplexy.

According to handwritten notes by Adelbert M. Scriber (former owner, editor and publisher of The Republican Watchman), the Alex Overton farm was at the foot of Beech (Beach?) Hill (near Livingston Manor NY) just below his own family’s farm. (It appears that the Scriber family was living in a home originally owned by either Gabriel Beach or his sons Orrin and Frank Beach) When Mr. Scriber was only about twenty years old he was briefly the editor of the Livingston Manor Times . He states that Charley Ellis (brother of Marinda Ellis Overton) was the bill collector for this newspaper and lived with the Overtons.

He adds that on one of his visits to the Overton home during this time, Charley Ellis was telling of some New York City robberies, when suddenly Mrs. Overton jumped out of her chair and shouted, “Oh! Oh! How easily someone could have shot me through that window!”

Prior to finding this handwritten notation regarding” Mrs. Overton’s brother, Charley Ellis” we had only known that Alexander Overton’s wife’s name was Marinda but we had no last name.

Alexander and Marinda had at least one child: (perhaps others)
